Dr John Sambevski
Overview
Dr John Sambevski is a highly experienced Specialist Orthodontist with over 15 years of clinical experience dedicated to creating healthy, confident smiles. As the principal orthodontist at Dee Why Orthodontics, Dr John provides specialist orthodontic care for children, teenagers, and adults, with a strong focus on precision, long-term stability, and individualised treatment planning.
He is a certified Invisalign Diamond-level provider, a recognition awarded to a small percentage of Invisalign providers worldwide, and also holds certifications with Spark and Angel aligner systems. This breadth of experience allows him to select the most appropriate treatment approach for each patient, whether that involves braces, clear aligners, or a combination of techniques.
Education and Training
Born and raised in Sydney’s inner suburbs, Dr John completed his primary and secondary schooling locally before commencing tertiary studies at the University of New South Wales in 2001. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2004 before pursuing dentistry at the University of Sydney, where he graduated with Honours in 2008.
During his dental training, Dr John developed a strong interest in orthodontics and undertook research in the field. He authored a thesis examining sleep apnoea and the effects of mandibular orthopaedic functional appliances on posterior airway space, which was later published in the Australian Orthodontic Journal.
After graduating in dentistry, Dr John gained broad clinical experience over six years working as a general dentist across rural New South Wales, including Dubbo and the Southern Highlands, as well as Sydney’s western and south-western suburbs. This period provided him with a strong foundation in comprehensive patient care.
In 2014, Dr John was accepted into the highly competitive University of Sydney Orthodontic Program, where he completed his specialist training and graduated with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics. During his specialist studies, he conducted clinical research into accelerated orthodontics and root resorption, which was subsequently published in the European Orthodontic Journal.
Academic an Teaching Roles
Dr John holds a part-time academic appointment as an Honorary Associate Lecturer in the University of Sydney’s Department of Orthodontics. He is also a clinical instructor in the Sydney University Long Orthodontic Program, where he provides orthodontic education and clinical guidance to general dentists at the Sydney Dental Hospital in Surry Hills.
Clinical Approach and Interests
Clinically, Dr John practices the full scope of orthodontics and has particular interests in functional jaw orthopaedics, complex interdisciplinary cases involving compromised, missing, or impacted teeth, aesthetic orthodontic appliances, orthognathic surgery, and adult orthodontics.
He places strong emphasis on patient education, ensuring that each individual understands the unique features of their case, the available treatment options, and the timing that is most appropriate for achieving a stable, long-term result. His approach is thoughtful, evidence-based, and focused on outcomes that stand the test of time.

Outside the Practice
Outside of orthodontics, Dr John enjoys spending time with his young family and has a passion for skiing, basketball, tennis, fishing, and is currently learning how to surf.
