Children’s Orthodontist Northern Beaches
At Dee Why Orthodontics, we believe that looking after a child's growing smile should be a reassuring, pressure-free experience. Every child develops at their own unique pace, and our entire focus is on finding the absolute best timing for their individual needs. Led by specialist orthodontist Dr John Sambevski, our practice provides clear, practical advice to help you support your child's dental development with total confidence from day one.
Early assessment does not mean early treatment
One of the most important aspects of children's orthodontics is timing. Starting too early can sometimes lead to unnecessary steps, while waiting too long can make corrective care more complex. Our role is simply to help map out the right time to act.
A first orthodontic assessment is generally recommended around the age of eight. At this stage, a mix of primary and permanent teeth allows us to see exactly how the bite, jaws, and teeth are developing. In most cases, treatment isn't needed straight away- the most valuable outcome is simply a clear plan to monitor their growth until the time is right.
When should my child first see an orthodontist?
An assessment around age eight is an excellent way to gain clarity if you notice any of the following signs:
Severe crowding or teeth erupting out of their natural position
Protruding front teeth or an uneven facial symmetry
Developing bite issues, such as an underbite, crossbite, or deep bite
Early or unusually late loss of primary baby teeth
Ongoing thumb or finger-sucking habits
Mouth breathing or structural airway concerns
Some of these concerns may require early treatment. Others may simply need monitoring. The value of an early orthodontic visit is knowing the difference.
A Thoughtful Approach to Jaw Expanders
When it comes to early orthodontic care, jaw expanders are one of the most effective and valuable tools we have. When a child presents with a narrow upper jaw or a developing crossbite, timely expansion can work wonders, safely widening the upper arch, increasing airway dimensions, creating natural space for crowded adult teeth, and balancing how the jaws fit together.
Because expanders are so impactful, our focus is simply on ensuring they are utilised at the absolute best point in your child’s unique growth cycle. While early intervention is exactly what some children need to unlock their skeletal growth potential, other children are better served by a period of careful, specialised monitoring. This allows us to watch how their smile develops naturally, ensuring we only step in when treatment offers a clear, long-term clinical benefit. Our guiding philosophy is to provide honest, balanced advice so you can feel completely confident your child is receiving the right care, at the right time, without any unnecessary intervention.
What if my child does need early treatment?
If an assessment shows that early intervention is the best path forward, there is no need to worry. Early care (often called interceptive treatment) is usually very straightforward and focused on simple, gentle adjustments. It might involve wearing a comfortable appliance for a short period to clear a crossbite, make room for crowded adult teeth, or guide jaw growth. By looking after these foundational issues early, we aren't just shifting teeth- we are setting up a healthier environment for their smile to develop, which may eliminate the need for further treatment, or makes any future treatment during their teenage years much shorter and simpler.
Caring for Growing Smiles At Every Stage
1. Growth Monitoring & Observation (Ages 8–10)
Because most children do not need immediate orthopedic appliances, this path is focused entirely on foresight. By reviewing your child's dental development at regular, practical intervals, we can identify exactly when their jaw growth velocity is ideal for treatment. This allows you to plan ahead with complete confidence, knowing we will only step in when it is most efficient and comfortable for your child.
2. Braces & Clear Aligners for Teenagers (Ages 11–14+)
Once the majority of permanent adult teeth have erupted and the jaws are in their final stages of development, we can focus on definitive alignment and bite correction. We offer dependable options tailored completely to your teenager's lifestyle, including modern traditional braces, discreet clear ceramic options, and custom clear aligner systems. We discuss the advantages of each path openly so your family can make a choice that feels manageable and comfortable.
What happens at your child’s first visit?
During your child’s first visit, we assess the teeth, bite, jaw development, facial balance and eruption pattern of the adult teeth. We will explain whether treatment is needed now, whether it is better to wait, or whether no treatment is required at this stage.
Our aim is to give parents clear, practical advice so they can make informed decisions without pressure or confusion.
