Orthodontic Retainers Dee Why and Northern Beaches
At Dee Why Orthodontics, we provide orthodontic retainers and retainer advice for patients from Dee Why and across the Northern Beaches. Retainers are an important part of maintaining the result after braces or clear aligner treatment, helping to reduce unwanted tooth movement over time.
Whether you have recently completed orthodontic treatment, your retainer has broken, or you have noticed your teeth shifting years after treatment, we can help you understand your options.
Why are retainers important?
Teeth can continue to move throughout life. After orthodontic treatment, retainers help hold the teeth in their new positions while the gums, bone and surrounding tissues adapt.
Without retainers, teeth may gradually shift, even after well-planned orthodontic treatment. Retention is therefore an important part of protecting the time, effort and investment that went into achieving your result.
Fixed and removable retainers
There are two main types of orthodontic retainers: fixed retainers and removable retainers.
A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth to help hold them in position. It is discreet and works continuously, but it needs to be kept clean and checked if it becomes loose or damaged.
A removable retainer is usually worn at night and can be taken out for eating, brushing and flossing. It is important that removable retainers are worn as instructed, as inconsistent wear can allow teeth to shift.
What if my retainer breaks?
If a fixed retainer breaks or comes loose, the teeth may start to move. It is best to have it checked as soon as possible, even if only one part feels detached.
If a removable retainer cracks, no longer fits, feels tight, or has been lost, it may need to be repaired or replaced. In some cases, a new scan or impression may be needed so a replacement retainer can be made accurately.
My teeth have shifted after braces or Invisalign
It is common for patients to notice some tooth movement if retainers have been lost, broken or not worn consistently. This can happen months or even years after orthodontic treatment.
Minor changes may sometimes be managed with a new retainer or limited orthodontic treatment. More noticeable movement may require clear aligners, braces or another orthodontic approach to improve the tooth positions again.
At Dee Why Orthodontics, we will assess the amount of movement, the bite, gum health and long-term stability before recommending the most appropriate option.

Retainers after braces or clear aligners
Retention is recommended after both braces and clear aligner treatment. The type of retainer, how often it should be worn and how long it should be used will depend on the individual patient and the type of orthodontic correction completed.
For many patients, long-term night-time retainer wear is recommended to help maintain the result. We will explain your retention plan clearly before and after treatment so you know what is needed.
Specialist retainer advice
Retainers may seem simple, but retention planning is an important part of orthodontic care. The right approach depends on the original tooth positions, the bite, gum health, oral hygiene, wisdom teeth, previous relapse and the likelihood of future movement.
At Dee Why Orthodontics, retainers are planned with attention to long-term stability, comfort and practicality. Our aim is to help you maintain your orthodontic result with a retention plan that is clear and manageable.
Replacement retainers in Dee Why
If your retainer is lost, damaged or no longer fitting properly, we can assess whether a replacement retainer is suitable. In many cases, a new digital scan can be taken so a replacement retainer can be made.
If the teeth have already moved, we will explain whether a new retainer can hold the current position or whether further orthodontic treatment may be needed first.
