Clear aligners are a removable alternative to fixed braces and can be used to treat many orthodontic problems. At Dee Why Orthodontics, clear aligner treatment may involve Invisalign, Spark or Angel Aligners depending on the individual case. The aligner brand is only one part of treatment. The more important considerations are the diagnosis, the tooth movements required, the bite, and whether aligners can provide the necessary control.

How clear aligners work

Clear aligners use a series of custom-made removable trays to move the teeth gradually. Each aligner is worn for a prescribed period before progressing to the next in the sequence. Attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help achieve particular movements, and elastics may also be required in some cases. Treatment is reviewed regularly and may require refinements if tooth movement differs from the original plan.

Are clear aligners suitable for everyone?

No.

Some cases are particularly well suited to aligners. Others may be treated more predictably with braces or with a combination of approaches.

Suitability depends on factors such as:

• the type and complexity of tooth movement required

• the bite

• root and tooth position

• periodontal support

• previous dental treatment

• patient cooperation

The fact that a case can technically be treated with aligners does not necessarily mean that aligners are the best option.

How long do aligners need to be worn?

22 hours per day, 7 days a week. Clear aligners need to be worn consistently for treatment to progress as planned. They are removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning the teeth. Poor wear can lead to loss of tracking, delayed treatment and the need for additional aligners or changes to the treatment plan.

What are attachments?

Attachments are small tooth-coloured shapes bonded to selected teeth. They help the aligners grip the teeth and apply forces in the direction needed for particular movements. Not every tooth requires an attachment, and the number and position of attachments depend on the treatment plan.

Will refinements be needed?

Almost certainly. Refinements are common in clear aligner treatment. A refinement involves taking a new scan and producing an additional series of aligners to improve the fit of the teeth or continue movements that have not progressed fully. The need for refinements does not mean that treatment has failed. It is often part of managing the difference between planned and actual tooth movement.

Clear aligner treatment is not simply about ordering a set of trays. The quality of the result depends on diagnosis, planning, staging, attachment design, bite correction, refinement and careful monitoring throughout treatment.

How long will it take to straighten my teeth with Invisalign?

The length of Invisalign treatment depends on the complexity of the orthodontic issues being addressed. Mild cases may be completed in as little as six months, while more comprehensive treatment can take 18 to 24 months or longer.

At your consultation, your orthodontist will assess your individual case and provide guidance on the expected treatment timeframe based on your clinical needs.

Is Invisalign painful?

Invisalign uses the same biological process of tooth movement as braces, so it is normal to feel some pressure when changing to a new aligner. This sensation is usually mild and short-lived, settling within a day or two as the teeth begin to move.

Most patients adapt to Invisalign quickly as part of their daily routine.

Invisalign, Spark and Angel Aligners

Invisalign is a well-known clear aligner system, but it is not the only option. At Dee Why Orthodontics, we also work with Spark and Angel Aligners where appropriate.

Having access to more than one aligner system allows treatment to be planned around the patient rather than the brand. The most suitable option will depend on the complexity of the case, the desired tooth movements, the bite, lifestyle factors and clinical goals.

Invisalign for teenagers

Clear aligners can be a good option for some teenagers, particularly when they are motivated, responsible and able to wear their aligners consistently. Aligners need to be worn as instructed for treatment to progress properly.

For teenagers, we assess not only the position of the teeth, but also growth, bite development, oral hygiene, compliance and whether aligners are likely to be the most reliable option. For some teenagers, braces may still be the better choice.

Invisalign for adults

Many adults seek orthodontic treatment because their teeth have shifted, they were unable to have treatment when younger, or they want to improve their smile and bite in a more discreet way.

Clear aligners can be particularly appealing for adults because they are removable and less visible than fixed braces. Treatment can often be planned around work, family and lifestyle commitments, while still aiming for a carefully controlled orthodontic result.

What happens at your Invisalign consultation?

At your consultation, we assess your teeth, bite, smile, facial balance and overall orthodontic needs. We will discuss whether Invisalign or another clear aligner system is suitable, what treatment would involve, how long it may take and whether any alternatives should be considered.

How are Invisalign treatment fees determined?

The cost of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of the tooth and bite movements required, the likely length of treatment, and whether refinements or additional stages are expected. Because Invisalign treatment is highly individualised, fees are tailored to the recommended plan after assessment.
