What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a form of clear aligner therapy that uses a series of custom-made, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth and improve bite alignment. It is a popular alternative to braces, particularly for adults and older teenagers seeking a more discreet orthodontic treatment option.

Each aligner is worn for a prescribed period before progressing to the next aligner in the sequence. Over time, these controlled movements guide the teeth into their ideal positions.

Invisalign can be used to treat many common orthodontic concerns, including crowding, spacing, misalignment, and certain bite problems such as overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite.

How many appointments will I need?

Invisalign treatment typically requires fewer in-office visits than braces. Appointments are usually scheduled every 8 to 10 weeks to monitor progress, assess aligner fit, and make any necessary refinements.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign treatment involves wearing a sequence of clear aligners made from medical-grade plastic. These aligners fit closely over the teeth and apply gentle, controlled forces to move them incrementally.

To achieve precise tooth movements, small clear attachments may be bonded to some teeth during treatment. Because the aligners are removable, they must be worn for approximately 22 hours per day to be effective. Consistent wear is essential for treatment to progress as planned and for results to be predictable.

While Invisalign is the most well-known clear aligner system, Dr John Sambevski also has extensive experience with other advanced aligner systems, including Spark and Angel. This allows orthodontic treatment to be tailored to the specific clinical needs of each patient.

How long will it take to straighten my teeth with Invisalign?

The length of Invisalign treatment depends on the complexity of the orthodontic issues being addressed. Mild cases may be completed in as little as six months, while more comprehensive treatment can take 18 to 24 months or longer.

At your consultation, your orthodontist will assess your individual case and provide guidance on the expected treatment timeframe based on your clinical needs.

Is Invisalign painful?

Invisalign uses the same biological process of tooth movement as braces, so it is normal to feel some pressure when changing to a new aligner. This sensation is usually mild and short-lived, settling within a day or two as the teeth begin to move.

Most patients find Invisalign comfortable and easy to adapt to as part of their daily routine.

Braces or Invisalign. Which is right for me?

Braces and Invisalign are both effective orthodontic treatments, but they suit different clinical situations and lifestyles.

Braces are fixed to the teeth, meaning treatment progression is largely controlled by the orthodontist and is less dependent on patient compliance. Invisalign requires a high level of commitment, as aligners must be worn as directed for treatment to remain on track.

A specialist orthodontic assessment helps determine whether Invisalign or braces is the most appropriate option for achieving a stable, long-term result.

Can children and teenagers have Invisalign?

Invisalign can be suitable for teenagers and some younger patients, provided they are able to wear their aligners consistently and care for them responsibly. Because success with Invisalign depends heavily on compliance, it may not be the best option for all children.

Your orthodontist will advise whether Invisalign is appropriate, or whether another orthodontic treatment option would offer a more predictable outcome.

How is Invisalign treatment cost determined?

The cost of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the length of treatment required. Because Invisalign treatment is highly individualised, fees are discussed after a comprehensive orthodontic assessment and tailored to the recommended treatment plan.

Most patients choose to manage orthodontic fees through staged or periodic payment arrangements, which are explained clearly at the consultation.
