Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most often. If your question is about fees or payment plans, you will find those answered on our First Visit & Fees page.
Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?
No. You are welcome to book a consultation with us directly. Many of our patients are referred by their dentist, but a referral is not required.
At what age should a child first see an orthodontist?
Around age 7 to 8 is a sensible time for a first assessment. In many cases the outcome is simply monitoring growth and development, with treatment only recommended when it is genuinely indicated.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional three years of full-time specialist university training in orthodontics and is registered as a specialist. Orthodontists focus specifically on the diagnosis and treatment of tooth alignment, bite problems, jaw relationships and facial growth. Your dentist and your orthodontist work together, with your dentist continuing to look after your general dental health during orthodontic treatment.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
It depends on the complexity of your case and the approach recommended. Comprehensive treatment typically ranges from around 12 to 24 months. We give you a realistic estimate at your consultation, based on your own assessment.
Can adults have orthodontic treatment?
Yes. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, and adult treatment is a significant part of our practice. Options include braces and clear aligners such as Invisalign, and the most suitable approach depends on your individual assessment.
Should I choose braces or Invisalign?
Both can achieve an excellent standard of treatment in the right case. The better question is which approach suits your diagnosis, lifestyle and preferences, and that is exactly what your consultation is designed to work out. Dr Sambevski works with braces, Invisalign and other clear aligner systems, so the recommendation is based on your case rather than on a single product.
I have already been given a treatment plan elsewhere. Can I get a second opinion?
Yes. Second opinions are a core part of what we do. Dr Sambevski will review your situation independently and give you an honest assessment. Sometimes that confirms the original recommendation is sound, and where it is, we will say so.
Will teeth need to be removed for treatment?
Not in most cases, but sometimes extraction is the right clinical decision. It depends on the individual diagnosis, including crowding, facial balance and long-term stability. This is exactly the kind of question your consultation is designed to answer properly.
Do I need to wear retainers after treatment?
Yes. Retainers protect the result after braces or aligners, and retention is planned from the beginning of treatment, not as an afterthought. We will explain the type of retainer recommended for you, how it should be worn, and how it will be monitored.
