Why Choose a Specialist Orthodontist?
Orthodontic treatment is not just about straightening the front teeth. A well-planned result considers how the teeth fit together, how the bite functions, how the smile develops and how stable the result is likely to be over time.
At Dee Why Orthodontics, orthodontics is all we do. Every treatment plan is designed, supervised and reviewed by Specialist Orthodontist Dr John Sambevski, with careful attention to the teeth, bite, facial balance, comfort and long-term stability.
Careful planning. Beautiful results.
What is a specialist orthodontist?
A specialist orthodontist is a dentist who has completed additional specialist training in orthodontics and is registered as a specialist in that field.
Orthodontists focus on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of tooth alignment, bite problems, jaw relationships and facial growth. This specialist focus is important because orthodontic treatment can involve more than moving individual teeth. It often requires careful assessment of the bite, growth, gum health, facial balance, timing, treatment mechanics and long-term stability.
At Dee Why Orthodontics, orthodontic care is not an add-on service - it is our entire clinical focus.
Orthodontics is more than straight teeth
Straight front teeth are only one part of orthodontic treatment. A well-planned orthodontic result also considers how the upper and lower teeth meet, how the smile fits the face, how the bite functions, and how stable the result is likely to be after treatment.
Two patients may appear to have similar crowding or spacing, but the best treatment plan may be completely different depending on their bite, jaw relationship, growth pattern, gum health, facial balance and long-term goals.
That is why specialist assessment matters. The appliance - braces, Invisalign or another clear aligner system - is only one part of treatment. The diagnosis and treatment plan are what guide the result.
Why planning matters
Orthodontic treatment works by moving teeth through bone. That movement needs to be planned carefully.
Good planning considers:
which teeth need to move
which teeth should not move
how the bite will be corrected
whether space needs to be created or preserved
whether growth is still occurring
whether gums and bone can support the intended movement
whether braces, clear aligners or another approach is most appropriate
how the result will be retained after treatment
This is especially important in growing children, teenagers with developing bites, adults with gum concerns, patients with previous orthodontic relapse, and cases involving missing teeth, impacted teeth or restorative dental planning.
Braces and aligners are tools - not the treatment plan
Braces, Invisalign, Spark and Angel Aligners can all be useful orthodontic tools. But no appliance is automatically the best choice for every patient.
Clear aligners may be suitable for some patients who want a removable and less visible option. Braces may be more predictable for certain types of tooth movement or bite correction. In some cases, a combined or staged approach may be recommended.
At Dee Why Orthodontics, treatment is not planned around a product. It is planned around the patient.
That means we look first at the diagnosis, the bite, the treatment goals, the likely stability of the result and the practical realities of each option. Only then do we recommend the appliance or approach that best suits the case.
Timing matters in children’s orthodontics
One of the most important roles of a specialist orthodontist is helping families understand timing.
Most children do not need early orthodontic treatment. Often, the most valuable outcome of an early assessment is reassurance, monitoring and a plan to review growth at the right time.
Early treatment may be helpful in selected situations, such as crossbites, functional shifts, significant protrusion, severe crowding, impacted tooth concerns, habits or developing bite problems. But starting treatment too early can sometimes make the process longer than necessary.
At Dee Why Orthodontics, we aim to recommend treatment when there is a clear benefit — not simply because treatment is possible.
Teenage orthodontics: choosing the right approach
The teenage years are often an ideal time for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. By this stage, most adult teeth have erupted, the bite can be assessed more clearly, and there may still be useful growth remaining.
For teenagers, the decision between braces and clear aligners depends on more than appearance. We consider the bite, oral hygiene, treatment goals, appliance reliability, lifestyle, compliance and the type of tooth movement required.
Some teenagers do very well with clear aligners. Others are better suited to braces because braces are fixed to the teeth and do not rely on remembering to wear the appliance. The best choice is the one most likely to deliver a controlled, stable result for that individual patient.
Adult orthodontics needs careful assessment
Adult orthodontic treatment can be highly effective, but it often requires different planning from teenage treatment.
Adults may have gum recession, bone loss, missing teeth, worn teeth, crowns, implants, previous dental treatment, previous orthodontic relapse or bite changes that have developed over time. These factors do not necessarily prevent orthodontic treatment, but they do need to be considered carefully.
For adults, the goal is not simply to align teeth. The aim is to plan treatment that respects gum health, bite function, facial balance, comfort, aesthetics and long-term stability.
Where needed, we are happy to work with your general dentist or other dental specialists as part of a broader treatment plan.
Why specialist supervision matters during treatment
Orthodontic treatment is a process, not a one-off product.
Teeth do not always move exactly as planned. Bites change during treatment. Aligners may need refinements. Braces may need adjustments. Growth, cooperation, gum health and biology can all affect how treatment progresses.
Specialist supervision helps ensure treatment is monitored, adjusted and refined appropriately. At Dee Why Orthodontics, Dr John Sambevski reviews treatment progress carefully and makes changes where needed to keep the treatment plan on track.
Long-term stability matters
A beautiful result needs to be maintained.
Retention is an essential part of orthodontic treatment. After braces or clear aligners, retainers help reduce unwanted tooth movement and protect the result over time.
A specialist orthodontic plan considers retention from the beginning, not just at the end. This includes the type of retainer, how it will be worn, how it will be monitored and what to do if a retainer breaks or stops fitting properly.
Why choose Dee Why Orthodontics?
Dee Why Orthodontics is a long-established specialist orthodontic practice in Dee Why, caring for patients from across the Northern Beaches.
Our approach is calm, careful and considered. We take the time to explain your options, recommend treatment when it is appropriate, and plan care around the individual patient rather than around a single appliance or product.
Patients visit us for children’s orthodontic assessments, teenage orthodontic treatment, adult orthodontics, braces, Invisalign, clear aligners, retainers and second opinions. In every case, the aim is the same: clear advice, careful planning and a result designed with long-term stability in mind.
Questions to ask before starting orthodontic treatment
Before starting orthodontic treatment, it can be useful to ask:
What is the actual orthodontic diagnosis?
Is treatment needed now, later, or not at all?
What are the advantages and limitations of braces?
What are the advantages and limitations of clear aligners?
How will the bite be corrected?
How will gum health and long-term stability be considered?
What happens if treatment does not progress as expected?
What type of retainers will be needed after treatment?
Who will be planning and supervising the treatment?
Good orthodontic treatment begins with good questions.
